There are a couple of problems with copying:-
- You may play it “right” but it didn’t come from you. Unless you make supreme efforts to “own” that piece of music you may never play it convincingly.
- You weren’t “in at the start” of that piece. You didn’t experience how it developed.
- Without excessive practising, which will spoil the piece for you (and therefore for listeners), it may never come within your comfort zone. You need to be “secure” in front of an audience.
On the other hand, if you are the originator of the lick, the solo or the piece:-
- You can’t really play it “wrong”.
- You will play it with conviction.
- You will be more able to stay within your own comfort zone.
- You can edit “on the fly” (“ooh – they liked that bit. Let’s do that lick again!”).
